Triantafyllidis Research Group
April, 2024
Our group is excited to announce that one of our members, Tania Ioannidou, has completed a three-month research stay at the Institute of Catalysis Research and Technology in Karlsruhe. Tania joined the group of Prof. Dr. Jan-Dierk Grunwaldt and she worked on the synthesis, characterization, and testing of solid Lewis Sn-Beta catalysts for aldol condensation reactions under the supervision of group leader Dr. Erisa Saraçi and the expertise of Dr. Philipp Treu, Dr. Dominik Neukum, and Ms. Foteini Zormpa.
During the first part of her research journey Tania gained knowledge on Solid-State Ion Exchange (SSIE) technique for the synthesis of Sn-Beta catalysts. Moreover, she employed X-ray Diffraction (XRD), UV-Visible Spectroscopy (UV-Vis), Inductively Coupled Plasma Optical Emission Spectroscopy (ICP-OES), Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM), Thermogravimetric Analysis (TGA), and Nitrogen Physisorption for the physicochemical characterization of the catalysts. The catalysts’ efficiency was investigated in aldol condensation reactions, with three different experimental setups reflux, glass autoclave, and stainless-steel autoclave.
Results are more than promising and the next goal for this year is a joint publication between KIT and AUTH! These months gave Tania invaluable knowledge and experience, and she would like to personally thank the entire team in Karlsruhe for their support and guidance throughout her research stay.
