ISOLATION AND PILOT CULTIVATION OF LOCAL DUNALIELLA STRAINS FOR BETA-CAROTENE PRODUCTION (PILOUS)

Project code

Τ6ΥΒΠ-00101

Total Budget

199.366,59€

Duration

June 2019 – June 2022

The project is implemented under the «Special Actions “Aquaculture” – “Industrial Materials” – “Open Innovation In Culture“» which are co‐financed by the European Regional Development Fund of the European Union and Greek national funds through the Operational Program Competitiveness, Entrepreneurship and Innovation (EPAnEK 2014-2020) (project code: Τ6ΥΒΠ-00101)

Scope of the project
PILOUS project aims to implement an innovative, sustainable and holistic model of applied research and technological development actions for the production of high added value biotechnological products derived from biomass of local species of Dunaliella microalgae.

Main objectives

    • Isolation and multiphase characterization of strains of local microalgae of the genus Dunaliella from coastal aquatic ecosystems of the Greek territory and creation of parent monospecific (and/or alien) crops
    • Laboratory scale Parameterization of Dunaliella stalk culture in order to determine optimal growing conditions in terms of increased beta-carotene concentration
    • Analysis of the chemical composition of the produced biomass as well as development of improved protocols for extraction of beta-carotene isomers
    • Pilot large-scale cultivation of Dunaliella strain
    • Dissemination which aims at creating the conditions for the commercial exploitation of the know-how developed during this project.
